Do you like the Ford GT? Do you want to be surrounded by Ford GT’s? Do you want to take so many pictures of Ford GT’s that you have trouble picking the cover photo for your Ford Carlisle Oppo entry? Well then dear reader (*cough, Skaycog, cough* ) you may need to go to a little town in Pennsylvania. Like, right now.
My trip to Carlisle started out normal enough. Pay $10 for parking, make the long walk in and look over the hill as cars make their way in. My girlfriend came with me this year to see where I disappear to every year around the time of my birthday. She’s been to Carlisle before but never for the Ford event.
Walking through the vendor section, I noticed Ford brought their new GT350R to the show. It is menacing in person, although with the ground effects I thought it looked like a big car and not as sleek looking as its plain clothes counterparts.
Then I got my first clue this would not be a normal trip to Carlisle. Ford had brought their own GT with a manufacturer plate on it. Hmmm...
Walking further through the vendor section, there was Superformance with their Mark II kit. I had seen this car in past shows but it never gets boring to look at.
Superformance also had a very cool 289 FIA kit they brought. It was always surrounded by people so getting a picture was tough but I did get a shot under the hood.
There were interesting cars in the vendor section other than Shelbys and GT’s though.
I get closer to the main exhibition building and oh holy crap, its a row of Ford GT’s along with some kits.
My girlfriend and I then decide to walk through the main exhibition building. I tell her this is where the good stuff usually is. We walk in and, um... I had a bit of a freak-out.
Ford GT’s. The whole building... it was just filled with them. THE. WHOLE. BUILDING.
They had some GT40’s as well, which were either originals or very, very good kits.
One had some unusual doors for either open top motoring, very tall drivers or for easier parking job exits.
They had modern racing GT’s as well. One of them was open for people to sit in.
So I got out of the building and tried to shake off the notion that yes, we could live in a Utopian society were everyone drove Ford GT’s. To help me come back to reality, I looked at cars that were not Ford GT’s.
No visit to Carlisle is complete without a walk through the swap meet section. However, the weather started to come in and I made my way towards shelter.
My girlfriend and I go to the corridor under the grandstands to escape the rain. Only problem is, now I’m in a place that feeds a very bad habit of mine: diecast collecting.
I purposely stayed away from the people selling the diecasts, knowing it does not take much persuasion to get me to buy a diecast. I walk through, snap some pics and walk out. As I walk away, my girlfriend is running behind me holding a bag. She bought me a diecast for my birthday.
It was the last affordable Mark IV the guy had. I told her she did not need to do that. But I’m very, very glad she did.
On my way out, I found a tent filled with GT350’s. It was a tent, and the theme was GT350’s. All years, all kinds, all colors. At this point the Ford GT building desensitized me a bit so the magical GT350 tent was only sort of awesome.
On my way back up the hill, my girlfriend saw a good opportunity to take some pictures. This should give you a feel for how many cars show up to Carlisle. And remember, this is only one part of the fairgrounds.
What you have seen is only a fraction of what I saw. I’ve been to Carlisle many times hunting for parts and drooling over cars. Never have I seen so many GT’s though and I’m not sure when I will ever see anything like that again. It did feel special, and if you are remotely into cars I feel sorry if you did not get to go to Carlisle this weekend.

No problem. They may still be there tonight and tomorrow. Don’t know if you live near Pennsylvania, but if you do, GO!
